Hi there, and welcome to the Starchelle Communications blog! I’m Jen, and I’m here to help UK coaches and course creators make sense of social media marketing. In the last post, we covered the basics of social media marketing.
Today, we’re answering one of the most common questions I get:
"Which social media platform is right for my business?"
Let’s break it down so you can focus your time and energy where it matters most.
1. Start With Your Audience
The first step in choosing the right platform is to understand your audience. Each social media platform attracts different demographics, so knowing who you’re trying to reach is key.
Here’s a quick guide:
Teenagers & Under-30s: Try Snapchat or TikTok. These platforms are buzzing with younger users who love fun, engaging content.
Business-to-Business (B2B): LinkedIn is your go-to. It’s ideal for networking and showcasing your expertise.
Visual Appeal: If your product or service is visually stunning (e.g., a landscape gardener), Instagram is the perfect place to shine.
Community Builders: Facebook Groups are a great way to create and nurture communities, especially if you’re offering memberships.
Take time to identify your ideal customer. What are their goals, challenges, and interests? Why are they spending time online? Once you know the answers, you’ll know where to find them.
2. Align With Your Business Goals
It’s also important to consider your business goals. Different platforms excel at different things:
Instagram: Great for visuals, reels, and stories. Ideal for creative businesses and brands with visually appealing products.
Facebook: Best for building communities and sharing in-depth posts. Although posting in groups has become trickier, it’s still effective for engagement.
LinkedIn: Perfect for networking and building your professional brand.
TikTok: All about entertainment and fun, snappy videos.
Threads: A newer platform, popular with the former Twitter crowd. It’s perfect for short, conversational posts.
Think about your goals. Do you want to build a community? Drive traffic to your website? Generate leads? Match your goals with the platform’s strengths to focus your efforts wisely.
3. Create Your Action Plan
To make things simpler, here’s a step-by-step plan:
List Your Audience: Write down who they are, what they want, and where they spend time online.
Top Platforms: Narrow down the platforms that align with your audience and business goals.
Pick 1 or 2 to Start: Master those platforms before expanding to others.
Check Out Competitors: See what’s working for them. Look at where they post and how their audience engages. Are their followers commenting, liking, and buying? This research can give you useful insights.
Pro Tip: You don’t need to be on every platform! It’s far better to excel at 1-2 platforms than to spread yourself thin across five.
4. What’s Right for You?
Now it’s your turn! Which platforms do you think fit your business best? Take some time to analyse your audience, your competitors, and your goals to decide.
