Hello, this is my blog all about how to create a content marketing strategy. In the last blog, we explored what content marketing is (you can watch the video on YouTube: (160) What is Content Marketing? | Content Marketing Explained - YouTube). By the end of this blog, you’ll have a clear action plan to create your own content marketing strategy.
Why Do You Need a Content Marketing Strategy?
Without a strategy, you're just creating content and throwing it out into the wind—hoping something sticks. A strategy ensures that every piece of content you create works toward a specific goal.
Here’s What You Need to Do:
1. Define Your Goals
The first step is to identify what you want to achieve. Make sure your goals are SMART: Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound. This gives you a clear direction, and having a timeframe helps you evaluate whether it's working or if you need to pivot.
2. Identify Your Target Audience
You need a clear idea of who you're speaking to. This could be a detailed persona with a name, job, and even family background, or just a general idea of the type of person you want to reach. Knowing your audience helps you tailor your content to address their specific needs.
3. Plan Your Content
Now, my favourite part—planning! Get a calendar or a big piece of paper and map out what you’re going to create and when. For example, you could post a story on Monday, release a YouTube video on Wednesday, and send out an email at the weekend. Plan your content in a way that works for you and helps you stay consistent.
4. Create and Distribute Your Content
I’m a big fan of repurposing content. If you've made a YouTube video, chop it up into reels or shorter clips. If you've written a blog, record it as a video or pull out key points to create graphics for Instagram or Facebook. Repurposing helps you get the most out of each piece of content, saving you time and effort.
5. Track and Measure Your Results
Finally, it’s important to track your progress. I use a spreadsheet to track metrics like Instagram followers, posts, and stories. You might track different things, like engagement rates if you're looking for sponsors or listeners if you have a podcast. Whatever your metrics, be sure to record them monthly (or even weekly) so you can see what’s working and what needs tweaking.
Wrapping It Up
Understanding your audience and their problems is key to creating the right content at the right time. Make sure you're distributing that content effectively across the right channels, and don’t forget to repurpose it where possible. Always track your results and adjust as needed.
